DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (MLT)
A. DURATION

This program is a three (3) years programme, with strong Medical Laboratory Practical exposure.

B. GOAL & AIM OF THE PROGRAMME

The aim of this programme is to train competent medical laboratory technicians to meet present and projected service needs in primary and secondary health care services in Nigeria.

At the end of the training programme, the Medical Laboratory Technician Certificate holder should have the basic competences in the following areas;

i. Knowledge: at the end of each course, the graduates should have acquired basic knowledge that will enable them to work under the supervision of qualified Medical Laboratory Scientists.

ii. Skills: the graduates should be able to handle process and perform simple systematic analysis routine specimens he/she receives.

iii. Attitude: the graduates should appreciate the importance of his/her role in the chain of activities within the diagnostic laboratory. The graduates should know the proper reporting procedure and action for any sample received in a professional manner that ensures the spirit of team-work and skilful communication among peers and supervisory laboratory personnel.

E. WITHDRAWAL CLAUSE

i. Students who fail in 50% or more of the courses at any level of the programme shall Probate (repeat) the level and subsequent failure in the same number of course and level shall lead to automatic withdrawal from the programme.

ii. MLSCN extant rule on entry limit (three times) shall apply in respect of professional examinations.


C. EXAMINATIONS AND ASSESSMENT

The methods of students’ evaluation during their study will be according to the rules and regulations spelled out by the domicile training institutions. This should include quizzes, mid semester examinations, practical examinations and report in addition to the final written examination. Assessment of student performance in each course will be done through a combination of continuous assessment and end of semester examination. The final examination mark carries the total marks for both the theoretical and practical components.

The weighing will be as follows:

Continuous Assessment = 30%

End of semester Examination = 70%

D. AWARD OF GRADES

A lettered grade and numerical points shall be awarded to each student based on his/her total scores based on the evaluation criteria.

The Certificates shall be classified as follows;
